At gWorks, we value the dedication and skills that veterans bring to our team. Our veteran employees have served with commitment, often in challenging environments, and we’re grateful for the experience and perspective they now bring to their roles. Recently, we invited them to share insights from their transition to civilian life. Their stories reflect the impact of military service and the contributions it brings to their new careers.
The Transition from Service to the Civilian Workforce
For many veterans, the transition from military to civilian life can be complex, requiring not only new skills but also an adjustment in mindset. Meagan Burks, an Air Force veteran and Business Analyst at gWorks, shared how her internship at gWorks was “absolutely critical” to her transition. “I have been able to gain real world industry experience and learn new skills I never would have had the opportunity to learn otherwise.” she said, noting that the mentorship and guidance she received helped her gain confidence and find her career path post-service. “I was able to really nail down what I wanted to do after I separated, and was given a lot of advice and mentorship from gWorks employees who helped me get there.”
Bringing Military Skills to Civilian Roles
The skills veterans bring from military service—effective communication, leadership, and collaboration—are often a perfect fit for civilian roles. Our veteran team members highlighted how their military training shaped their professional lives at gWorks. For instance, Meagan Burks, noted that collaboration skills honed in the military made her an effective team player. She shared that trust, communication, and participation were core tenets in the military and continue to influence her work at gWorks.
As Cody Jenkins, Air Force Veteran and, now, Onboarding Specialist at gWorks, explained, the military’s diverse environment allowed him to develop an ability to connect with a wide range of personalities—a skill that’s proven invaluable in his role. Another onboarding specialist, Jared Neidel (Air Force), credited his experience as a Military Training Instructor with giving him an edge in helping clients retain information and build confidence in gWorks software.
Finding Purpose Through Public Service
For many veterans, transitioning to civilian life means finding a new sense of purpose, and roles at gWorks have offered them a way to continue serving. “The most rewarding aspect of my internship has been the opportunity to continue ‘serving’ in a different way,” Meagan Burks shared. Working for a company that supports local governments provides a sense of fulfillment and an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on communities across the country. “gWorks’ mission to support public service sectors has been fulfilling, and it’s encouraging to know that my work contributes to helping local governments. Many veterans struggle with finding purpose after leaving the military, and that sense of meaning can be a challenge during the transition. Being part of a company that actively helps to improve public services has been a gratifying and motivating experience.” Meagan added.
Advice for Veterans Entering the Civilian Workforce
Our veterans had some valuable advice for fellow service members considering a career in tech or public service sectors. “Don’t hesitate to take that first step toward something you’re interested in—it could open doors you never imagined!” Laura Guntren, an Army veteran, now gWorks’ Vice President of Marketing, advised, emphasizing that military skills are often more transferable than veterans might expect.
Jared Neidel also noted the importance of starting early, building experience while still in service, and continuously adding to one’s skill set. “Experience is everything nowadays, and it can be hard just to get an interview. If it’s possible, find work while you’re in the service to add to your resume to apply for those civilian positions.” Jared advised.
Ryan Canonizado, one of gWorks Documentation Specialists, shared that his experience in the Navy helps him to know when to trust the process. “The confidence with which a team approaches situations with and the inviting nature of the team makes it easy to trust what they are saying.” Ryan also added the gWorks team has been “immensely welcoming and supportive in aiding my transition out of the military and learning how to work in a completely new environment.”
Why gWorks Values Veterans
Veterans bring unique perspectives and experiences to our team, enriching our culture and boosting our ability to support clients effectively. As one team member noted, working for a company that values veterans shows an appreciation for the sacrifices made in the name of democracy and freedom. “It means everything to me,” added Jared Neidel. “I feel extremely blessed to work for a company that celebrates my background and allows me to incorporate my military skills even after leaving active service.”
